The Wet Well

C.1Plain-language definition

A wet well decouples intermittent inflow from pump operation and presents flow to the pump intake. Only the volume between control levels is cycling volume; concrete below pump-off and above pump-on serves other hydraulic, structural or emergency purposes. Every extra litre may reduce starts but increases detention.

C.2Governing relation or decision logic

For constant inflow q, pump rate Q and cycling volume V, fill time is V/q and draw time is V/(Q−q). The cycle is shortest at an intermediate inflow (half pump rate for the ideal single-pump case), which is why allowable starts cannot be checked at zero inflow alone. Units must be consistent, e.g. m³ and m³/s.

C.3The failure to name

Oversizing to “be safe” can create septicity, grease and solids accumulation. Undersizing or placing levels poorly causes rapid starts, inadequate submergence or alarms with no useful response time. A spreadsheet volume that ignores benching and dead zones is not the effective volume.

C.4Field review checklist

  • Separate cycling, dead, alarm and emergency-storage volumes.
  • Check starts across the inflow range using motor/pump limits supplied for the equipment.
  • Check detention and cleaning at current and future flows.
  • Coordinate pump-off, intake submergence, inlet invert, alarms, access and usable geometry.
