C.1Plain-language definition

A force main trades gravity depth for pressure and recurring energy. Diameter controls velocity and friction, but also detention, solids transport, surge magnitude and capital cost. Its route profile matters as much as its length because summits collect air and low points see pressure.

C.2Governing relation or decision logic

V = 4Q/(πD²) and straight-pipe loss follows Darcy-Weisbach hf = f(L/D)V²/(2g). Static lift depends on boundary levels, not intermediate pipe elevation, while local pressure depends on HGL minus pipe elevation. The design pressure envelope must include steady and transient cases.

C.3The failure to name

Selecting diameter on a peak-velocity band alone can create excessive detention at present flow or excessive energy for the asset life. A profile reduced to “length and lift” hides air pockets, vacuum exposure, drain-down and surge reflection points.

C.4Field review checklist

  • Evaluate present/future minimum, average, peak and staged-pump flows.
  • Build new and aged head-loss cases with actual internal diameter.
  • Plot HGL/EGL and transient pressure against the full route profile and pipe ratings.
  • Address air management, flushing/cleaning, isolation, drainage, restraint, corrosion and access.
