Submergence and Vortexing

C.1Plain-language definition

Submergence is the vertical depth from minimum liquid surface to the intake datum defined for the geometry. It suppresses the air path of a free-surface vortex, but adequate depth alone cannot correct a poor approach channel, asymmetric walls or strong pre-rotation. Floor clearance is a different dimension with a different failure.

C.2Governing relation or decision logic

Layouts are often reviewed with ratios such as S/D and C/D, where submergence S, clearance C and inlet diameter D use the same units. Required ratios depend on inlet Froude number, arrangement, approach velocity and governing intake criteria; obtain them from the applicable standard or manufacturer rather than universalising one value.

C.3The failure to name

Measuring from the floor overstates usable submergence and conceals inadequate bell clearance. Raising the pump-off level may suppress a vortex, but if one parallel pump remains rough the root cause may be asymmetric approach flow rather than insufficient average depth.

C.4Field review checklist

  • Define the intake datum and minimum transient/steady liquid level.
  • Check submergence, floor clearance, wall spacing and neighbouring pump interaction separately.
  • Observe swirl, surface vortices and pressure/current fluctuation across operating combinations.
  • Follow model-study triggers for large, unusual or strongly asymmetric intakes.
