Sewage becomes septic when biological demand consumes available oxygen and anaerobic conditions develop. Sulphide generated in the liquid can be released as hydrogen sulphide gas where pressure drops, turbulence increases or pH favours the dissolved molecular form. The result is not only odour: H₂S is acutely hazardous and can drive severe concrete corrosion after biological oxidation to acid.
Detention is approximately t = V/Q, with seconds from m³ and m³/s, but sulphide generation is not determined by detention alone. Temperature, wastewater strength, dissolved oxygen, pipe biofilm, pressure, pH and prior history matter. Use a recognised local or project model with stated inputs when prediction is required.
A single “maximum detention time” presented as universal hides climate and wastewater chemistry. Odour control at the outlet without addressing upstream generation can relocate exposure or corrosion, while relying on smell is unsafe because olfactory fatigue occurs.
