The Operating Point

C.1Plain-language definition

The pump does not independently choose a flow, and the pipe does not independently choose a head. The operating point is their intersection: the one combination both can sustain. Levels, roughness, valve state, speed and the number of pumps change one curve or the other, moving the point.

C.2Governing relation or decision logic

Solve Hpump(Q) = Hsystem(Q). Graphical interpolation is useful for review; a numerical root is useful for automation. Either method needs curves representing the same speed, pump combination, flow units and head datum. Stability also depends on curve shape, not merely the existence of a crossing.

C.3The failure to name

Calling the specified duty the operating point before intersecting curves assumes the conclusion. A single nominal crossing can hide runout at low static head, inadequate capacity at high head, or operation outside preferred range as the main ages.

C.4Field review checklist

  • Use matching axes, units, speed and pump configuration.
  • Find intersections for the minimum- and maximum-head system cases.
  • Read efficiency, power and NPSH at every governing point.
  • Check control transitions, parallel staging and any unstable or multiple-intersection region.
